Alaska II: Saturday, Sunday, Monday

John's favorite thing about our blog is reading vacation posts, so I usually love doing them, but I've been putting these off. I think it's because we were so miserably sick and I don't want to remember that part of the trip, but now that some time has passed it's easier to forget how awful we felt.
Saturday was a day at sea and we spent it exploring the ship. The baby toddler room was open for play with parents. Nobody (website, phone person, front desk on the boat, kids club) could tell us the hours or rates or anything about the nursery which was incredibly frustrating. It turns out it was mostly just open at night, which wasn't ideal, but we planned on at least having dinners together.
So sometimes Scott went to play with the big kids (which he was nervous about, but loved the crafts and games they did) and Jonah stayed with us.
Scott's group fed the kids, but Jonah's didn't, so we got all dressed up for our first formal dinner,
fed Jonah in the cafeteria area, dropped him off at childcare,
then started to have a lovely dinner together.
We were called out of dinner to change Jonah's diaper. It was liquid.
We took the kids back to the room--they had to stop and dance for a bit in the centrum.
We found a pet towel elephant waiting for us.
That night, Scott wasn't settling to sleep, so I had him come in bed with me for a few minutes to snuggle. He sat up and vomited all over us.
That's when I realized I'd been feeling a little off, but was actually feeling a lot off. John said he was, too.
We spent the night taking turns getting up for ourselves or to take care of the boys. We spent the next day fighting over the bathroom and sleeping on and off.
One of the perks of being sick on a boat is room service and laundry--I didn't have to worry about food or dishes or washing bedding. They let us watch movies for free and we had a/c and reminded ourselves that norovirus is usually a quick bug.
One downside was not having anybody who could help us and knowing we were whiling away our precious vacation hours sitting around in the room.
Sunday afternoon I woke up feeling a lot better. I let the boys sleep and sleep (I read three books on this trip. I'm so glad I filled my phone before we left), then John woke up feeling much better, too.
We rushed outside and made it on the last shuttle bus to the Mendenhall Glacier.
We were planning to hike to the waterfall and glacier, but had limited energy and two unenthusiastic boys.
They did love throwing rocks in the water, of course. And the important part was we were all well enough to walk around again and right in time to see the beautiful glacier.
By Monday we were still taking it easy, but mostly back to our normal selves. We walked into town in Skagway.
We saw the fish being fed and enjoyed a leisurely walk.
The boys loved the train.
Next time I'd like to take the White Pass & Yukon train, but it was not a good idea for this trip.

Instead we just enjoyed the beautiful scenery and fresh, crisp air.

There was a children's discovery room where the boys colored pictures and we learned a little about the gold rush. We were the only family there and lots of souvenirs in the shops were about grandparents, so we could tell we weren't the typical demographic of people visiting these ports. All of the employees were excited to see the kids, though. They kept getting stickers and attention wherever we went.
We saw the train go by as we walked back to the boat. Scott was upset that we weren't taking a ride on it.
We had a pretty low key day, but at that point we were grateful we could even get out of bed.
